Excellent colours on this one, very atmospheric! :) Always nice to see preserved locos being used, though I can't stop wondering about the contraption on the front that resembles a pair of buffers, which would seem odd to me, given that the engine has Janney style central coupler.

Most of the earlier New South Wales Government Railways locomotives had buffers like this. The ones still in revenue service have had them removed. :)

As far as I know, only one or two Australian state railways used buffers on diesel locomotives.

Thanks for the info! Buffers would just seem senseless to me when using a coupler that by itself keeps the distance between cars, unlike buffer+chain systems, where the chain would keep the cars together, and the spring loaded buffers would deal with any pushing force exerted on the train. Just me wondering ;)
